Ana Torfs and Sabine Folie in conversation
Sabine Folie has been following Ana Torfs’ work since 2006, when she visited her solo exhibition ‘Anatomy’ at daadgalerie in Berlin. At that time, Folie was chief curator at the Kunsthalle in Vienna, where she worked from 1998 to 2008. Their paths crossed again when Folie, who worked as the director of the Generali Foundation in Vienna from 2008 to 2014, invited Torfs to participate in two group exhibitions and a solo exhibition. Her work currently features prominently in a group exhibition in the Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, of which Folie has been director since January 2022. Folie’s programming is characterised by a surprising conversation between Old Masters and contemporary art.
AT: (Ana Torfs) Since the 1990s you have curated numerous exhibitions and edited many publications. Recently you were leading the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz (2017–2021), while also teaching at the University of Art and Design in Linz and at the Bauhaus-University in Weimar. A new chapter began for you when you were appointed director and curator of the Art Collections of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Did you already know this place well and visit it regularly?
